The BC provincial government is in the early exploratory stages of moving the ferry terminal from Balfour to Queens Bay.
The Nelson Star reports that the Ministry of Transportation is doing a technical review to see if a shorter crossing between the west side of Kootenay Lake and Kootenay Bay is feasible.
Currently the journey time is about 35 minutes, and is the longest free ferry crossing in the world.
Strong views have been expressed in opposition to the move, while others (such as some East Shore residents) are in favour. The Nelson-Creston MLA says that any potential move is ‘years out’, and that extensive public consultation would first take place.
