North Shore
Majestic waterfront with easy Nelson access
The “North Shore” is the colloquial name for the north side of Kootenay Lake, starting at Nelson and extending up and along to Balfour.
The highway hugs the lake, so there there are many incredible waterfront properties, as well as little nooks and small groups of houses tucked away in private locations.
You may hear people refer to parts of the North Shore as “1 Mile”, “6 Mile”, and so forth. This is simply the number of miles from Nelson, so “6 Mile” is 6 miles away from Nelson—about a 15 minute drive.
The North Shore is ideal for house hunters wanting:
- Easy and immediate lake access
- Quick access to Nelson without being in Nelson
- Wider range of sun hours (locations can vary greatly in their openness and visibility)
Highway 3A is the only (main) access, so many listings with that address are North Shore properties.
